<Forums> are either super-focused on a single topic, or so broad as to be unusable for anything.
Not an idle chatter place.
You either talk about what the area is about, or not at all.
With discord and chatrooms, you can walk in and say nothing special and people will respond and go with it.
forums have always seemed unfriendly to idle chatter
I couldn't go into a forum and say, "hi. What's happening today?" and people just chat

When I think about it, a chatroom defeat s the purpose of a forum
A chatroom about memes and general chit-chat means people won't be posting them in the forums as well

There are hundreds of thousands of forums that have died over the years because chatrooms give people the real time satisfaction over the waiting on a forum post
There aren't as many chatrooms though
Mostly because the 'big' ones take people away from the smaller ones
Discord, MIRC, temaspeak and a few other ones are what I consider the big ones

Decided I'd post this here for discussion.
The second half is something I think could be solved by implementing a way to make threads update more in real time, whether via an auto-refresh, or straight up dynamically updating the thread for everyone looking at it at around the same time as someone posting on it.
The first half is more high-concept, but I do want to figure out how to address that.
Makes me remember that 4chan uses "[topic] general" threads for talking about specific topics in a more stream-of-consciousness/free-form fashion?
I'd need to look more into how that works.</section>

A lot of forums started doing continuous threads or mega-threads, too
One of my old favorite forums is still around
back in the day, there were new threads every week and some would displace older threads
now it's all shit from 15 years ago on page 900+ [i.e. threads that were created 15 years ago, but they still get posted in, into the present day]
The topic got more generalized to allow more discussion without a new thread each week for the latest news
You get better quality discussions with specific threads, BUT users crave casual discussion and will just go towards those
Even in imageboards where threads expire , you will see then having generals
That desire is stronger than the inconvenience of baking a new thread every so often

Oh right, I forgot about "megathreads" on Reddit.
Those sorta serve the same purpose as "general" threads on imageboards.
I do feel like implementing those on here needs to be done in a way to make them work differently from regular threads.
If nothing else, it's possible for me to do that, since I'm building this whole place from scratch.</section>

If megathreads (whatever I call them) are for casual/general conversation about a given topic/matter, then I have the idea where older posts in the megathread get auto-deleted, if they're older than some threshold value.
If you see something in the megathread that you think <strong>should</strong> stay permanently on the site, you <strong>must</strong> create a dedicated thread based on that post in the megathread. There can be a dedicated action to do that, to streamline it.
A megathread post can have a maximum of one dedicated "proper" thread.
The megathread post node gets one sibling node, with a link to that affiliated thread.</section>
